Those of you who attended UCF in the last 15 years and also drank beer should remember The Liquid Cellar. I saw many a local band there while enjoying an all-you-can-drink something or another during my college years.
Well the space is opening back up on Friday night and is now called Fubar. Co-owner Matt Merdian says it’s a different concept from its predecessor but they still pay a tiny tribute to The Liquid Cellar by hanging the original sign over the bar.
The name, an acronym that originated in the military and can’t be repeated here (those of you squeamish about language do not click), is also the theme for much of the décor in the bar that has pictures defining the name in their own fun way and “Top” lists throughout the bar in honor of the name. Also adding to the decoration are the UCF fraternities and sororities that were asked to help design the bar top with the help of a graffiti artist that was flown in from Miami. That kind of scares me, I keep imagining the bar to look like a homecoming float. How about you?
According to Merdian, Fubar will have a menu that is all handmade, no frozen fries or burgers reheated and offer drink specials during the evening. Unlike the old space, he wants to stay away from local bands and focus on DJ-related nights spinning electronica and mashup.
To see the new bar for yourself go to the grand-opening party starting at 9 p.m. on Friday night. Cover is free at first but increases throughout the evening depending on time and folks in the door. It will max at $10. There will be free drinks, drafts and shots all night.
Fubar is at 12233 University Blvd. in Orlando and is open from 11 a.m. – 2 a.m. daily.
